(palmless) Palm Sunday Worship - March 28, 2021 at 9:30am
This will be the second Palm Sunday in which we cannot participate in the traditional palm procession.
Fortunately, Luke has given us an out: Did you know that Luke doesn’t even mention palm branches (or leafy branches of any kind) in his telling of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem? That’s right, according to Luke, people in the crowd “spread their cloaks on the roadway as Jesus rode along.”
I am fairly certain that we all have coats and jackets we can easily put our hands on during this cold and rainy season. In fact, let's look for our best, or favorite, or most expensive coat or jacket and bring that into the worship space this Sunday.

An (Ashless) Ash Wednesday with Holy Communion 2021
The world feels like a very different place from the world in which we gathered last year on a Wednesday in February to confess our sinful ways, to acknowledge our mortality, to receive the ashes, and to commend ourselves to the mercy, forgiveness, and grace of our Creator.
Perhaps this different world calls for new symbols and new practices. So this year we invite you to join us on February 17th, 2021, at 7pm via Zoom. for an ashless Ash Wednesday Worship Service with Holy Communion at Community of ChristChurch. Let’s explore the ways that not only our brokenness and our mortality, but also our connectedness and our belovedness all come together in the central symbol of earth… soil… dirt.
Brokenness:
We repent of our sinful ways, individually, and collectively, as we acknowledge the many ways the Christian Church has been complicit in the genocide of indigenous peoples and the oppression of black and brown bodies.
Mortality:
We lament all the lives lost in this global pandemic and we remember the words from our burial liturgy: “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.”
Connectedness:
We celebrate our connection to the earth, to all creatures and to our fellow human beings. “So YHWH fashioned an earth creature out of the clay of the earth, and blew into its nostrils the breath of life. And the earth creature became a living being.” (Gen 2:7)
Belovedness:
We worship a God who loves us even in our brokenness and, in forgiving us, calls us to ways of reconciliation, wholeness, mutuality and compassion… for the land and for our neigbors.
Please consider engaging in these spiritual practices in preparation for this worship experience.
DIG: Dig… up some soil from your garden or yard and bring it into your worship space.
DIG DEEPER: Learn… Click on this link (https://native-land.ca/), type in your address and discover which tribes first resided on the land where you live.
Write the names of these tribes down in your journal or on a piece of paper.
DIG EVEN DEEPER: Pray… for repentance for us, for the church, for our nation and for the healing and repair for all of creation.
We remember that it is from the stuff of soil and earth that we are all made, and to this soil and earth we will all return.

11:45 am - 12:45 pm Permaculture: Julian Dominic, Witchhazel Design
Permaculture, in its simplest form, stems from the words “permanent” and “agricultural”/“culture”. While mimicking the patterns in nature, permaculture is an intentional design language. It seeks to meet human needs through careful ecological planning and regenerative design methods while caring for the earth, her people and always having an abundance to share. A sort-of spicy form of small and large-scale landscaping! Julian Dominic Julian Dominic owns and operates the permaculture design firm, Witch Hazel Designs and Education. As a professional permaculture designer and teacher, Julian helps to consult and implement resilient and community-driven designs for diverse communities from scales of urban spaces to rural farms. Additionally, Julian uses his skills an instructor for The City Repair Project and as an environmental educator with Portland Public Schools. Through his travels to various land-based cultures around the world, Julian studied Sustainable Agriculture at Warren Wilson College and now spends his time growing, processing and harvesting annual and perennial foods while finding different ways to gather and feed his family and friends. When he’s not growing food or teaching, Julian enjoys milking his goats, making nixtamal, tying cordage, and occasionally singing to old soul standards. - What are we going to do when the toilets don’t work?
- What’s going to happen to sewer infrastructure?
- Do we have the knowledge and materials we need to build safe, functional household and multi-household toilet systems?
- Shouldn’t we plan now for more resilient sanitation systems?
